“When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” John 19:30
It has been a few weeks but I have finally completed step 2 of my creative process to achieving an art quilt. This is my composition with paper from my sketches a few weeks ago.
I was never good at composition so I really wanted to try my absolute best with this piece. It took me a few days to get it right but, here it is.
The place where Christ was crucified, Golgotha, is very rocky with some plant life. I new I had to represent this in my piece. Not just because of the location but from the significance. Dying on the cross, for me, is beyond physical understanding; beyond physical pain. I can’t imagine how His spirit must have anguished in this moment, not too mention the physical pain.
I used earth tones as well as script work for the stone. This event in our History has been written in stone since the beginning of time. Perhaps, even before that. God knew He had to send His son to die so we may spend eternity with Him. The Earth was made for this, as were we. The ultimate love and sacrifice of our creature is more beautiful and complex than we could ever comprehend.
I wanted to draw your eye not only to the cross but also to the Earth. The red is used as a focal point so you may understand that He died for us all. His blood was spread on the entire Earth that day, and for all time. It breaches time and space to where we are today.
The deep blues are meant to anchor the piece. They draw your eye into the event within the work. As it was on that day, all of heaven was watching as the Son of man took his last breathe on the cross, and gave up His spirit!
I encourage you all to attend Easter this coming Sunday. Not just to appease your mother but to honestly go and listen to the good news of Jesus Christ. Everything in this world means nothing apart from Him. You can have all the money you want and all the success, but if you do not have Christ it is all for not. I pray you all have a blessed week!
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
